p2pnet.net News:- Remember Winny, the Japanese p2p application? And claims that the first people to be nailed "on suspicion of violating copyright laws" in Japan were using it, "offer movies and video game software to an unspecified number of people over the Internet"?

Now, says asahi.com here, 19 pages of information about police investigations, including 11 names and addresses, have been posted online through Winny.

Kyoto prefectural police are, "investigating an officer on koban (police box) duty at Shimogamo Police Station for a possible breach of internal regulations," it says, going on:

"Police soon tracked down the source. The policeman admitted he had created the documents around 2002 on his private laptop. There was no Internet access at his police box. He went online from home.

"The information was being exchanged on Winny software - a popular file-sharing network. Police suspect documents were leaked by a virus that affected user files when the officer went online."

The officer is quoted as saying the leak was an accident.

"According to police regulations, officers must register private PCs used for work with their superiors," adds asahi.com. "Officers are not allowed to store personal information on the hard drives or take their PCs home without permission."
