Tacky Apple ads wreck stories
p2pnet.net news view:- If ever I was thinking of buying a Mac, and the thought had crossed my mind, it’s now gone forever.
As I write this, I’m looking at stories on the European Commission deadline for Microsoft, “to reply to a new charge sheet”.
I landed on a CNET page carrying a Reuters wire piece on the subject. But I didn’t get around to actually reading it, thanks to this stupid and intrusive Mac idiot ad.
How the hell are you supposed to properly take in a story with that kind of drivel churning away beside it?
But I guess these kinds of video ads are marginally better than the floaters which suddenly appear in the middle of a page, or other ’smart’ advertising gimmicks which serve only to turn people off and do zip for the product or media carrying it. And they must be effective or the advertisers wouldn’t bother. Would they?
However, at least one good thing has come out of the Apple ads: the Novell Linux spoofs ;P

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

That kind of ad is why i turned off my browsers flash plugin about 5 years ago.
If i come across a site that requires flash, i find another site instead. No one site is worth the hassle involved in turning flash back on. Only PR/marketing morons think flash is a good idea, and any company that gives PR/marketing that much emphasis isn’t worth looking at or dealing with.

True.
CNET has these stupid mini-video ads running while you’re trying to read an article.
It’s so damn annoying I’ll resize my browser window or scroll part or all of the cr*p out of my vision.
Talk about turning people OFF!
I like them on TV but on a computer monitor these ads suck.

I hate popup ads and the kind you mentioned in your story — in your face advertising.
But still, WERE YOU REALLY thinking of buying a Mac until you saw this ad? No, of course you weren’t. But you knew the headline would draw a crowd, even if the related story didn’t deserve that crowd, but another about lousy advertising.
Well, you fooled me.
Once.

You obviously are not running ‘Proximodo’ (<http://proximodo.sourceforge.net/>). Get with the program (so to speak).

Proximodo (<http://proximodo.sourceforge.net/>). *Never* begin web browsing without it.

Sure I am. I’m also thinking of buying a tropical island. When I can afford it.
The latter will probably come first ;P
Cheers!

I was going to use this site as a source for news, but after reading this article, you can completely forget about my readership because I’m never coming back to this site, ever.
See how stupid that sounds? You call this an article? Hack.
PS I’m really not coiming back, though. And those of you who think there’s too much mindless crap out there should think about doing the same. Wouldn’t be crap to visit if no one visited crap.
March 28th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Ugh. So dumb. Okay, NOW I’m not coming back.

How about buying a personality first?

Turn Javascript off, and all of that annoying, flashing adcrap goes away or at least sits still.

The idea daunts me a bit, though, I have to admit : )
