p2pnet.net News:- Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the World Wide Web, has won the Finnish Technology Award Foundation’s first-ever Millennium Technology Prize.

It’s an, “international acknowledgement of outstanding technological innovation aimed at promoting quality of life and sustainable economic and societal development,” says the FTAF.

Seventy-eight innovators from 22 countries were nominated for the Millennium Technology Prize 2004 in energy and the environment; communication and information; new materials and processes; or healthcare and life sciences, says the foundation, adding:

“Berners-Lee’s selection was made unanimously by the board of the Finnish Technology Award Foundation at an April 14 meeting based on the recommendation of the International Award Selection Committee.”

Future prizes will be awarded biennially.

Sir Tim, as he is now, was knighted last year. He was also named one of the top 20 thinkers of the 20th Century by Time magazine.

He founded the World Wide Web Consortium.

Now a professor in the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Berners-Lee devised the WWW in 1989 while he was working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Finnish award is worth $1.2 million.
