Texas school waits for RIAA attack
p2pnet news | RIAA News:- The Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas is nervously poised waiting, but not ready, for an attack by the RIAA.
So far, it’s ony had to suffer C&D letters. But that’s soon about to change, suspects a senior staff member.
And while the SFA waits, “Virtually every computer that comes through (the SHACK) has Limewire installed on it,” says Jason Lisenby, going on:
“Limewire serves only one purpose, and that is to illegally download files.”
We’re pretty sure Limewire’s Mark Gorton might find a bone or 10 to pick with the statement.
SHACK is short for Student Help Assisting Computing Knowledge at the Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas with Lisenby as the coordinator.
Lisenby might need to revise his definition of Limewire before he continues imparting it to students as fact.
Meanwhile, “In the past week, Dr. Peggy Scott of the SFA Judicial Office received nine ‘Cease and Assist’ letters from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA),” says the Pine Log, going on:
“Each asked her to contact an individual student and inform him or her that unless the student ceases illegal downloading, they will be sued by the RIAA.”
SFA’s Judicial Office has delivered 183 of the RIAA exortion demands since 2005, says the story, going on:
“According to Scott, what is shocking about these letters is that they decreased in number during the last semester, showing the RIAA may be about to ’step-up.’ The step-up would be a change from a ‘Cease and Assist’ letter to settlement letters in which the RIAA would sends a letter directing the student to pay a settlement to the RIAA to avoid going to trial.”
“Directing” the student to settle? Surely not.
Anyway, “These settlements,” Scott states, “are to avoid a lawsuit under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 2005 (DMCA). Although our University students are yet to get one, this is starting to happen in other colleges. They haven’t hit us yet, but it will be nasty when it does.”
Sadly, the RIAA isn’t “starting” to do anything, Dr S. It’s been running a brutal, full-out attack on students through their schools since early 2006.
“According to Scott, the settlement letters state a website where the student can pay the settlement online with his or her credit card,” says the Pine Log.
It looks as though SFA students are in for a shock if they’re expecting knowledgeable help from school staff.
