p2pnet.net OT News:- Stephen Georgiou, aka Cat Stevens and these days better-known as Yusuf Islam, was denied entry into the US, yesterday, on “national security grounds”, says the Associated Press.
However, there were no details about why he was “considered a risk to the United States,” says the story.
Stevens became Islam in the late 1970’s and is active in the international peace movement.
“He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds,” homeland security spokesman Dennis Murphy is quoted as saying by AP, adding, “HE said the man would be put on the first available flight out of the country today.”

If the facts say he should be blocked than that is what should happen. The comment about deporting Bush is obviously being made by somebody who lacks common sense and that is exactly what is the problem. People are taking there personal feelings and assuming that everybody that does not think like them is immediatly a monster when in fact there opinions are just as important as the next persons. What amazes me is that if Cat Stevens did something wrong when he got here the criticism would have been huge.

I am not surpriced at this act by the american goverment. Even jurnalist now require special junalist visas to enter the united states (one of only three countries in the world with such requiments, Isreal and north Korea being the others) else they get the same treatment. Even old chinease ladies and babies have had the same treatment with the same escuse.

The issue with Cat Stevens (or whatever name you want to use for him now) is not as unusual as you might like to think.
My wife and daughter were booked on a flight earlier this year to go back and visit her family. As soon as she walked into the airport and up to the counter, you saw the lady at the counter give her a quick look up and down and the next thing you know both she and my daughter had missed their flight due to a VERY thorough check of ALL of their personal belongings.
So what made my wife stand out? Why was she ‘randomly selected’ (as they stated at the time) to go through this check? It wasn’t the type of baggage they were carrying. It looked just like everybody else’s. She didn’t do anything suspicious. She wasn’t even nervous prior to finding out that they were probably not going to catch their flight and have struggles with any and all connecting flights because of it.
So why? The only reasons that I have been able to make out is that they saw a lady there that was obviously from a different part of the world and was headed out of the country. Even though she was traveling with a 6 year old girl, that MUST mean she is a terrorist, right??
This is the current state of things in the United States at this point. We have let them take or civil liberties away from us and even the idea of being innocent until proven guilty is a thing of the past in an airport. If you buy a ticket, you are automatically a terrorist and they can violate your privacy in any way they see fit all in the name of ‘National Security’. It doesn’t matter if you are traveling from one US state to the other or all the way around the planet, you are at their mercy and you are guilty if they say you are.
FYI — For those of you that are wondering, my wife is from Asia. She doesn’t even come from, nor was she traveling to, any part of the world that is considered to be a hot spot for terrorists. She simply walked into an airport in the Midwestern United States where she stood out in the crowd. That is all it takes these days, right or wrong.
I, for one, think it is wrong…

so far not one person has given the reason for why Cat Stevens was on the list let alone why he would be refused entry.
Go back … way back … to the late 80’s and a little known book that made the headlines. The book? The Statanic Verses, written by Salman Rushdie. Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, proclaimed the book a work of blasphemy and condemning Rushdie to death for “insulting Islam, the prophet Muhammed and the holy Koran.” A bounty was put on Rushdie’s head.
Guess what gental readers who think Cat Stevens is some innocent artist caught up in some govermental red tape mixup? Cat Stevens was one of those Muslims who said he would kill Rushdie.

Even if what you say is true (which I can neither confirm or deny) I still fail to see how that makes him a threat to national security today.
Can you please explain how you think that one incident justifies having him deported almost 20 years later?
Digging up dirt from the past is great if you can show it to have relevance to the issue of today. I personally don’t see how the two issues relate to each other.

In a way, it was probably a good thing that this incident happened to someone famous, since this is exactly the sort of thing that is occurring all the time, but with little press coverage. Arabs and Muslims are routinely singled out for abuse by US law enforcement authorities. Here is another example in today’s news:

This did not just start with the Pentagon/WTC skyjacking. When Timothy McVeigh committed his terrorist act and blew up a building full of people, it was innocent Arabs - the perpetual “usual suspects” - who were initially rounded up for arrest.
Cat Stevens was a peace activist who had contributed to many Muslim charities, therefore making him an enemy of the state of Israel. He was arrested in Israel in 2000 while filming a documentary for VH-1’s Behind the Music, and deported.
Since Zionists occupy many key positions within the US government, all accused enemies of Israel get classified as enemies of the USA - and treated nearly as badly as Israel treats Palestinians.

I fail to see how this isn’t an important fact given that Salman Rushdie had to live in fear of his life over what he wrote, it essentially ruined his life.
Let’s see, he is part of a religion that issued fatwa’s which lead to the deaths of thousands of people, kidnappings (most famous is the 29 americans held hostage in the late 70’s). Khomenini rule in a lot of respects is more responsible for the rise in international terrorism than saddam ever was. He held conferences that future al Quada leaders attended. etc
So lets see you have a follower of the Islamic faith who’s ruler terrorizes a nation (and the rest of the world) who told his followers to kill Rushdie and anyone else who was involved in the publication of the book, who later tells Reuters he agrees with the fatwa issued by the Ayatolla and that he would kill Rushdie if he could.
I don’t have any simpathy for Cat Steven’s. Just goes to show sometimes you should zip your lip. What he said is coming back to haunt him.

Does anyone pay attention to what is going on? he was deported because he was on a terror watch list. he has been a terror sympothizer for years. he has been suspected of supporting Hamas and In July 2000, he was denied entry to Israel amid reports he had donated tens of thousands of dollars to Hamas. He denied ever giving the money but at this point we need to act on intelligence. if our intelligence is telling us that we need to keep him out then by all means keep him out!!

To start we all don’t live in the USA so stop assuming everyone else does. “Freedom of Speech” is a american legal concept. I’m not american.
But to delve into this legal term. You have to right to express yourself so long as that expression does not cause another harm. A classic example is a a protest at the local city hall. The speaker stands up and says, “go rob a bank because they are stealing from us and time to take back what is ours”. He has a right to say that but as soon as anyone acts on that statement it becomes a crime and is no longer a case of “free speech”.
If you look at the Ayatollah Khomeini the year before the Satanic Verses were published he had made a religious decree that those in prison would be asked where their loyalties lie, those who gave the wrong answer were strung up and hung, around 30,000 people were hanged! So did the Ayatollah have the right of “freedom of speech”? A year later the decree surrounding Rushdie was made. That decree ruined his life. It forced him into hiding with body guards in fear for his life.
It’s quite obvious you’ve missed the point. Things you say and do can come back to haunt you. What Cat Stevens did by talking to Reuters was a really bad decision, for CAT STEVENS. I know people who still hate him to this day over saying what he said back in 1989, I know others who threw out his records. It upset a lot of people.
BTW this isn’t a case of “I didn’t like what you said so, STFU” this is a case of “oh shyte, that is the dumbest decision he’s made, he should have kept it to himself” it really hurt his career, it hurt his reputation. That was the point of “Just goes to show sometimes you should zip your lip” because if it can come back and bite you in the ass, it will.

I traveled to Arizona from San Francisco a few months ago to do some camping in the GC. I was careful to carryon only items which would not get confiscated by the fascists.
When I got to GC, I was searching through my pack for some film in one of the pockets of my pack. IN there I found my huge camp knife which I thought I had lost many months ago. I use it to cook and chop meat with when I’m cooking. It has a huge 6″ blade. The handle is made of titanium and it has a double lock hinge.
I walked right through security with thing.
The same folks who took my mom’s knitting scissors away from her (yes the one her mother gave her before she died) let me walk on a plane with a knife so big, I can easily slice bread with it.
This site is about CIVIL LIBERTY. Our civil liberties. Bush and his cronies don’t give two sh1ts about our REAL safety. Their army’s are not successful. Their airport security is not successful… ALL they want to do is TRAIN YOU to gradually accept the violation of your civil liberties.

Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) was probably initally stopped for three simple reasons:
1, he’s male and his name sounds like that of an arab (they probably didn’t realise it was Cat Stevens).
2, where he was going. Washington
3, the fact that he had a private plane.
When they deverted him, and realised who it was, they had to justify it.
Thanks to his past links to hamas etc. this is easy for them.
This scenario seems more likely than he was on any terrorist watch list
since he wasn’t stopped a couple months earlier when he came to the US.
What changed in over that period of time?
Nothing.
As a male non-US citizen I am stopped everytime I pass through a US airport
on international flight. I don’t look like an arab and I’m not on any watch list,
so this story is no surprise to me.
