Sony fined $82 million
p2pnet.net News:- Sony Computer Entertainment and its US subsidiary may have to pay touch feedback technology firm Immersion Corp - which says it ” brings feeling to Microsoft Windows and the Internet” - $82 million for patent infringement.
“A judgment has not yet been entered, and Immersion expects that post-trial motions and other actions by Sony will be filed with the Court with respect to the jury’s decision and other matters,” says Immersion, going on that it’s looking for a permanent injunction, “to enjoin Sony’s continued infringement”.
Immersion hardware and software technology is used in medicine, consumer electronics, gaming and 3D interaction, among other things.
“In February 2002, the company filed suit against Sony and Microsoft Corp., alleging that the companies improperly used company technology in their popular PlayStation 2 and Xbox gaming consoles,” says Law.com, adding:
“In a conference call Wednesday, Immersion President and CEO Victor Viegas said the company had sought $299 million in damages. He said Sony had argued that damages should be set at $9.4 million if the jury found Sony Computer Entertainment infringed both patents. Microsoft settled out of the case last year.”
Sony is expected to appeal.

These companies should file their complaint straight away or get it voided.
How long has sony been using vibrating joysticks? Since the PSX! What does this have to do with the PS2? Nothing! Its just another case of a company sitting on patents for the sole purpose of milking profits by sitting down and doing nothing.
