Kelly Clarkson on Weed
p2pnet.net News:- “Hi ICPs - A big thank-you to all the volunteers who helped test the Kelly Clarkson file over the last 24 hours, it has now been publicly released by RCA, so Weed rules apply and it can be freely played and distributed by anyone now. For those who volunteered to test, but haven’t heard back from us yet, thanks very much and you’re off the hook … since we’re now live.”
That’s from an email fired off by Weed’s John Beezer on July 6 to various Weed content promoters and with Snocap, Mashboxx, Peer Impact, etc, already in hand, it’s yet another sign that the Big Four music cartel is slithering inexorably towards commercial p2p.
It looks like Kelly is going out at $1.09 per download.
Here’s the Word on Weed from Weed:
- PLAY free 20 second sample / BUY music with a Weed account / SHARE Weed files and earn money
Sony BMG owns the RCA Victor and RCA Records labels while Weed is an independent company started by a group of Seattle musicians and software developers to push the Play/Buy/Sell concept.
Here’s what Beezer had to say in his email.

Sony BMG Music and RCA Records have stepped up and they are the first major label to distribute content in Weed format. They have earned a huge amount of respect from us in the process. We all know that Weed is different … in some ways very different. And to a lot of people different = difficult. Sony BMG and the people at RCA liked the idea and took the attitude that we needed to work together to solve the problems. It’s taken almost a year to accomplish this and all parties ended up making some concessions. The end result is that we were able to put together the first major label deal for true superdistribution … ever.
This is a huge milestone for Weed and we want the ICPs to be the first to hear about it — so this is the first public announcement. There is still a ton of work ahead for all of us, but I consider this is a great sign that our faith has been well-placed. Thanks to everyone on this list for helping us get here!
Kelly’s Weed file, which is an exclusive remix of her single “Since U Been Gone”, can be found at the following URL: http://weedshare.com/promos/kelly
Officially, this distribution is a test. And you’ll discover that we have made two major changes to the way Weed files work for this test.
First, the file only plays in the US. I should point out that well over half our ICPs live outside the US, so I want to tell you that we fought this until we realized it was an absolute dealbreaker based on legal limitations Sony is bound by. We are not in favor of geographic filtering, since files easily travel across borders, and our goal is to use it only as a transitional strategy to make it possible for complex publishing agreements to be respected. We hope to put together worldwide deals in the future.
Second, we modified the file so that it offers unlimited 20 second sample previews instead of the Weed standard 3 free plays. We also expect this to be a transitional strategy … and we have been working with publishers to overcome their concerns about offering free sample plays and we’re making progress.
In spite of the fact that Weed purists (myself included) see these changes as compromises, I’m extremely proud of the deal that the Weed team put together. Everyone who has looked closely at our company has said we’d never be able to do business with the majors and that we couldn’t succeed without the majors. In spite of this incredible pressure, we stuck to principle and held our ground on several items and prevailed on many of them. The compromises we did make were in good faith and they were matched by compromises that Sony BMG and RCA made as well. In other words, it was a very tough deal to put together, but ultimately very fair.
You can probably tell I’m excited about this. And I have a habit of writing endless e-mails when I’m this psyched … so I guess I’ll wind it up here for now. I’ll be happy to answer any questions about this on this list.
Way to go, Weed!
John
(Thanks, G)

that’s hilarious, a competing model for distribution has now been harnessed by the recording industry, with this adoption they have now switched the burden of bandwidth (distribution, delivery) to the consumer, WOW, smart but slimey tactic….they’re really trying to make gold from lead on this one…

The only way I’d redistribute that crappy music is if it came with some tangible weed. U have 2 smoke some powerful sh*t to tolerate that talentless anorexic teen dolt drivel.

look- this is a big deal because it will most likely get people who haven’t tried the weed software to download and install it.. IF all goes according to plan. That means more people will be open to weeds P2P capabilities, will get excited about the program and spread the word AND THEN continue to try new weed files. So what you say? Well weed is a level playing field within the music industry. It doesn’t matter if you are big or small weed works just the same for you. It’s a way for all artists to get paid for their music and to also utilize the power of a free sample. Thats what radio is after all, a big free sample machine, and radio is what sells music.
That being said do I really think it’s going to work? Uhmmm- not so sure on that one. It’s still tough to compete with free and thats what p2p offers. However if they are going after the ITunes market they might have a good chance.

That’s really sad. Talent is talent: and she can sing. Your ignorant comments waste our time as well as your own.
