New BitTorrent client
p2p news / p2pnet:- There’s a new BitTorrent client in town.
It’s called µTorrent and it’s purpose-built with a tiny, 89kb footprint so as to use as little cpu, memory and space as possible.
Alex H, p2pnet’s development manager, is having a look and so far, it’s ‘bloody brilliant,’ he says.
µTorrent features:
- Multiple simultaneous downloads
- Smart bandwidth usage
- File level priorities
- Configurable bandwidth scheduling
- Global and per-torrent speed limiting
- Quickly resumes interrupted transfers
- UPnP support (WinXP only)
- Supports popular protocol extensions
- Localized to different languages
Very cool.
We’re running it as we write this and it certainly seems to be doing the job, no prob.
Something you think we should know? tips[at]p2pnet.net
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win
- Mohandas Gandhi
They depend on us. We don’t depend on them. Bug the hell out of your local congress person, MP, or whoever is supposed to represent you, wherever you are. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance.

i’ll check it out, but i don’t like clients with multiple downloads - too much like grokster and others. i get too confused and end up with a bunch of unfinished files.
i prefer bittornado (formerly shadow’s experimental) to all others so i can look at one file at a time and keep better track of them.
well, goo luck to whoever made this. i’m sure there wil be a lot of interest.

Wow what an informative review. if AlexH says it’s “bloody brilliant” that seals it for me, It must be the greatest thing ever.
I mean seriously, do you think p2p.net is some kind of joke? It must have taken you what, 20 seconds to cobble together this garbage? Come on man, we want intelligent commentary and thought provoking analysis, not this trash.

—we want intelligent commentary and thought provoking analysis—
The full quote says, “so far it’s ‘bloody brilliant’,” which suggests there’ll be more to come.
Meanwhile, one of the many things we’re short of is people who can intelligently review software. So if you can provide “intelligent commentary and thought provoking analysis” I’d sure like to hear from you ;p
Cheers!

Hopefully Alexander Hanff will “develop” a bit more to these recently scantly detailed stories other than “Bloody Brilliant!”
Geeze, I didnt even get a “Read on>>>>>>>>>>” with this story…
October 9th, 2005 at 4:22 pm
Actually, ‘Alex H’ isn’t Alexander Hanff, although Hanff is a good friend of p2pnet. ‘Alex H’ is Alex H in Australia. [http://p2pnet.net/story/6514]
And if you’re the person who was complaining about the ‘Read on’ with the arrows we used on some posts, you’ll have noticed it vanished immediately after your thoughts on the subject.
See? I really DO pay attention.
And why aren’t you registered?
Cheers!

If he doesn’t like your commentary or site, this overly critical person should write his own reviews or go to another site.
You do a fine job Jon. Keep up the great work!

Btw, this is a great program if you have a really slow PC. If not, BitComet is much better.

uTorrent is great for seeding files without using lots of PC resources.
October 9th, 2005 at 5:18 pm
I just switched seeding a torrent from ABC (where it was consuming almost 19MB of memory) to uTorrent where it’s using less than 2MB.
There *are* a few missing features — I like ABC’s ability to limit the upload rate while downloading (else it’s at default maximum) — but I really like the added info.
And my ISP will love me now I can reduce my upload and download speeds during their specific “busy” hours!
Give it a try! It’s only a 89kB download and runs as an exec so doesn’t require an install…

There’s this operating system you should check out. It’s called DOS and it only lets you run one program at a time so you don’t get confused. You would love it.

“Alex H in Australia”
So there’s another Alex H in Sydeny hey… wonder if we are doppelgangers…

I’m trying it out right now because of this P2Pnet article (thanks!). I have to say I really like it so far. Downloading one file right now and it’s only using 2MB of memory. Seems to be every bit as good as Azureus. Simple too, which is great for bittorrent newbies. I’ll be recommending it to everyone from now on.

I made that comment to Jon after using uTorrent for about half an hour. The application made a strong impression on me and that was my initial reaction. From what I’m hearing, there are a lot of other people with similar opinions after using uTorrent for only a short while.
Yes, you can expect to hear more about uTorrent here in the future.
I hope you don’t find my other writings lacking in intelligent commentary and thought provoking analysis.

Change the UL/DL of the specific task. There’s a difference between the Global rates & the Specific Task rates.

Crashes when trying to change the port and applying options, then it crashes after restarting from a crash when you try to close it. Yeah I submitted to the developer the dump.
