UK gmail.com bites the dust
p2p news / p2pnet:- Google UK gmail.com is no more.
As of tomorrow, new Google mail users in Britain will get googlemail.co.uk instead of gmail.com, although existing gmail subscribers will keep their address, says PC Pro, continuing.
“Independent International Investment Research (IIIR) has used the Gmail name since 2002, two years before Google launched its service. IIIR had been seeking a payment from Google in the region of £25mn (close to $44 million) to £35mn in exchange for permitting it to retain the Gmail name. However Google decided that it was not worth that much.”
The decision follows an adverse court ruling in Germany which will, "leave Google supporting a different brand for its email service in two of the biggest European economies," says the Financial Times, adding:
"A Google executive said that the internet company continued to dispute IIIR’s claim, but that it had decided to change the name of its service in the UK to avoid confusion among potential customers. While existing users will continue to have addresses that carry the Gmail name, new email accounts in the UK will carry the name Googlemail."

Why did Google not think of the following options:
GetMail
GoMail
Reason: All common words in the dictionary are taken up as trademark names and with a friendly court any use of any word, in some corner of the world, can lead to trademark infringement damages.
Is this why the GOOGLE word was invented?
