French downloader jailed

A Frenchman who sold CDs made from songs he downloaded from the Net has been sentenced to six months in jail and fined EUR 1,000 ($1,250).

Bruno Dugas, 38, was found guilty of breaking copyright by setting up a web-based business through which he offered to sell CDs containing mp3s from p2p sites, says Agence France-Presse here.

Proceeds from the fine will go to the SPPF, a French body representing music producers and studios, according to the verdict handed down January 28.

Dugas was also ordered to publicise the judgement in two newspapers, says AFP, adding:

"So far, legal action in Europe has been limited to prosecuting people who have tried to make money off the trend, but recording companies have warned that home users adding to their own and others’ personal music collections could be next, as is already happening in the United States."

I dont know what the big deal is I remember when we used to tape music off the radio and they didnt make such a big deal out of it.
Why becuase now you can put it on a cd thats better quality they wanna prosecute you.
I agree with the people that make money off it and sell CD’s to people yes they should be fined but people who r downloading for there peronal enjoyment should be left alone !
If I buy a cd and copy it to my computer or to another cd its legal as long as i use it for my personal use. It should be the same way if I download it off the net ! All it is people who already have alot of money crying becuse they wanna be richer!! ENOUPH IS ENOUPH
I WILL KEEP DOWNLOADING AND MASKING MY IP ADRESS SO CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!!!!!

Serves him right. People downloading or copying CDs for the purpose of selling them deserve to be fined or jailed (for a short term).

However, people downloading or copying CDs for personal use or GIVING to a friend for free should be left alone.
