Sony’s newest camcorder

p2p news / p2pnet: Rumours that Hollywood’s MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is suing Sony for producing miniature camcorders are being discounted by industry analysts.

The MPAA says tiny handheld video recorders are used by so-called ‘pirates’ to copy feature movies which are then uploaded to the p2p networks, or burned onto discs which are then sold on street corners around the world.

Sony develops and sells not only camcorders, such as its new high definition HDR-HC3 HDV 1080i Handycam, but also burners.

"Sony billed its 18 ounce, 5.5 inch-long HDR-HC3 as the world’s lightest and smallest," says USA Today.

"The device, 26% more compact than the previous model, is set to go on sale next month in Japan for $1,300 and in April in the United States for $1,700."

However, "There’s no chance of the MPAA taking action against Sony for mass-producing these kinds of products, whether they’re used by pirates or not," says A. Nonimus Zourse, a senior analyst with Benn, Dover & Bakwartz.

"This would be like the left hand suing the right."
