Bill Gates to leave Microsoft
p2p news / p2pnet: Bill Gates says he’s going to step down as the man who runs Microsoft.
But his departure won’t be for another two years. And it won’t be total, says the Guardian Unlimited.
“Gates is going to shift his emphasis from working for Microsoft to giving his money away via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,” says the story.
“Gates’s day job as chief software architect will be taken over by chief technical officer Ray Ozzie, while his guidance of Microsoft’s research and strategy efforts will go to chief technical officer Craig Mundie.”
He also said he had no plans to give up the distinction of being the company’s largest shareholder, says the Associated Press, quoting him as saying, “I’m proud of that.”
Craig Mundie will immediately take the new title of chief research and strategy officer and will work with Gates in those areas, says AP. Mundie also will work with general counsel Brad Smith to guide Microsoft’s intellectual property and technology policy efforts.
But, “Gates’ decision comes at a difficult time for Microsoft,” says AP, adding:
“The company recently said it was delaying the new version of its Windows operating system yet again, and it is struggling to compete with Internet rivals such as Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. Investors also were caught off guard this spring when Microsoft announced plans to substantially increase overall research and development costs, and sent share prices tumbling.”
