Microsoft iPod: on the way
p2pnet.net News:- Having done a Steve Jobs by milking “leaks” for all they’re worth, saying a forthcoming mPod was mere speculation, Bill and the Boyz have done a complete about-face, going to Phase II and officially announcing Zune.
AND – it’ll have an an online sales site bearing a remarkable resemblance to you know what.
“Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products, the first of which will be available this year,” The Chicago Tribune has Chris Stephenson, Zune general manager of marketing, saying.
It doesn’t seem Microsoft has learned much about the nature of online music lovers. Apparently, it’s looking to the tried and failed downloan scheme under which you charge punters X-dollars per month and as soon as they stop forking out, their music libraries disappear.
But on the other hand, Microsoft is Microsoft and when it does another Jobs, that’s to say uses mZunes to promote Zunes, claiming it’s a genuine music service, and on top of that offers system makers an ‘opportunity’ to include mZunes pre-loaded …..
Anyway, some analysts say Microsoft, “confirmed the news to ensure that the speculation doesn’t drive expectations beyond what the products would actually deliver," says The Seattle Times, adding, “people briefed on the project said Zune will work with a Microsoft service that allows users to listen to a vast library of songs for a monthly subscription fee. These services act more like a rental service for music, although users can pay more to purchase permanent copies of songs.”
The project, dubbed Argo, will feature Zune to Zune wireless song transfer, and apparently, Zunes will have a, “brushed metal back with an engraved logo, not unlike the you-know-what,” says Engadget.

Has any one asked the songwriters how they want to be paid for rental of their music. By songwriters I mean real songwriters not some organization with the word “composer” or “collective” on their title.
My guess is that songwriters have absolutely no role in the negotiations and that others are negotiating or have negotiated behind doors for the songwriters, and the royalty scam will continue.
I wonder. does Microsoft allow the rental of their software?
