Canadian Net spy regime?
p2pnet.net News:- Canada’s privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart says she isn’t convinced the country needs laws to allow the police to spy on Net users without first getting a warrant.
“I want to have a lot of questions answered about why this is necessary,” Canadian Press has her saying.
The so-called Modernization of Investigative Techniques Act, expected this fall or next spring, is in fact a re-launch by Stephen Harper’s minority Conservative government of a Net surveillance bill originally mooted by the old Liberal administration.
In June, Canada’s Bell Sympatico was telling customers they should expect their online activities to be monitored routinely as part of incoming surveillance legislation, and, “Privacy advocates fear the bill would allow police to obtain personal information from Internet service providers simply by asking them for it,” says CP.
“The so-called lawful access’ bill became the subject of controversy this summer when Bell Sympatico changed the wording of its customer service agreement.”
But police officials, “argue the legislation is needed to help keep pace with increasingly sophisticated online criminals,” says the story.
Stoddart said Canada is already moving toward “increased police intrusion” with anti-terrorism legislation and, “The lawful access act, she said, marks another major shift in the laws governing personal privacy.”
A regime could come in, “which would allow for warrantless searches of telecommunications material,” she said.
Bu anyone who’s concerned with the incoming law, “will probably have to wait for a specific privacy incident to occur before any surveillance law is challenged under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,” CP states, adding:.
“The fact that there might be a charter challenge wouldn’t stop it from coming in,” Stoddart said.

Canadian Internet summery:
No more privacy.
No freedom of speech/expression.
Corporations sueing you to shut down your blogs.
Censoring of web sites.
I decided I will do one of two things:
Change all my Email addresses to something like:
CheapChemicals@me.ca
Use online nicks like:
Uranium241
Make a bot to visit every iranain/arab web site possible to run from my computer
OR:
Help my ISP by running Snort (packet capturing utility) and emailing them every single packet every 24-hrs to help them monitor if I am a good Canadain or not.
grrrrr
