More Sony batteries recalled
p2pnet.net News:- Sony Corp’s lithium-ion laptop batteries have again been named in a recall in what’s become an ongoing scandal.
Toshiba is pulling in 340,000 batteries worldwide but this time, there have been no reports of explosions or customer injuries but, the defect isn’t directly related to the problem behind last month’s recall of Sony batteries by Dell and Apple, “which cited concerns that the batteries could overheat and catch fire,” says the Associated Press.
This latest recall affects 100,000 Sony Energy Devices Corp laptop batteries in the US, 45,000 in Japan, and the rest in other parts of the world, says the story. They were installed in Toshiba Dynabook and Satellite laptops made March through May this year.
“The developments have come at a testing time for Sony which earlier this month announced that its PlayStation 3 games console would be delayed in Europe and will now now the crucial Christmas period there,” says The Times Online.
“The PS3 timetable has been pushed back because of problems encountered in manufacturing the next generation Blu-ray DVD system it will carry - which faces a fierce fight with Toshiba’s rival HD-DVD format.”
Sony BMG is also having troubles: its self-created rootkit spyware problems just won’t go away.
It planted SunnComm and First4Internet rootkit spyware onto music CDs and when buyers ran the discs, the software was secretly installed onto their computers, also opening them to hack attacks. More than a dozen class action lawsuits followed in the US and Canada. It settled quickly in the States, but Canadians, excluded from the US deal, were forced to wait.
Finally, last month the company said subject to court approval, it had reached a settlement agreement but, “close examination reveals that Canadian consumers will receive considerably less than their U.S. counterparts,” law professor Michael Geist pointed out.
Meanwhile, one wonders which company will be the next to join Dell, Apple and Toshiba in pulling Sony batteries.
